Winter weather affects school calendar

From the icy roads and cold temperatures to the seemingly incessant snowfalls, the winter weather beginning in December 2010 to the present has had an effect on everyone, including Rowan County Schools.  As always, the safety of our students and staff has been the primary concern when the decision is made to cancel or delay classes. The Rowan County School District has lost 15 days and 4 hours due to the inclement weather and dangerous road conditions.
To make up for some of the days missed due to the inclement weather, the Rowan County School Board passed a motion at a special-called board meeting that the week of March 21-25, 2011, which had previously been scheduled as a spring break week, will be used to make up some of the snow days.   It had already been decided by the Rowan County School Board that classes will be in session on April 22, 2011, a previously scheduled holiday. If parents have any concerns or questions about this decision, they are instructed to call their school principal.
“Just like last year, this winter has, indeed, been difficult,” said Superintendent Marvin Moore. “When we make the decision to delay or close school, we always try to err on the side of caution. We’re not just thinking about the safety of our students who are riding the buses; we’re also thinking about parents driving their children to school, our student drivers, and our faculty and staff.”
Moore added, “Making the decision to use spring break week as make up days is always difficult, and not one that the members of the Rowan County School Board take lightly. However, they also know how important it is to protect our students’ instructional time.  Just like our board members, the citizens of Rowan County have always had a history of being resilient and doing what is best, truly exhibiting the spirit of ‘Together We Can.’  Speaking for myself, the school district, and the members of the Rowan County School Board, we appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the students, parents, and staff.”
To make up for the missed instructional time, the Rowan County Schools calendar has been adjusted to reflect the following changes:
January 31st and March 3rd
Students will be in school a full day rather than being dismissed early.
March 21st through March 25th
School will be in session on these days and students will be in school.

April 22nd
School will be in session on this day and students will be in school.

May 17th
Schools will be closed for Election Day.
