Kentucky Ballet
Someone who was obviously a ballet dancer was once quoted as saying, “Dance is an hourly and daily discipline, but it is also a lifelong happiness.” That happiness was expressed on stage and for students by the members of the Kentucky Ballet Theatre based in Lexington, Kentucky.
Through a three-year grant from the W. Paul and Lucille Caudill Little Foundation, the Kentucky Ballet Theatre has been able to bring a taste of the ballet to eastern Kentucky. The ballet company came to Morehead last spring with the promise to return in December to give students a sample of the characters and dances that make up the famed holiday ballet, “The Nutcracker.”
Students from each of Rowan County Schools’ elementary schools and preschool along with students from Rowan County Middle School and Rowan County Senior High School joined students from Fleming and Elliott Counties at Morehead State University’s Button Auditorium on either December 5th or December 6th to get a glimpse of the beauty of ballet theatre. Welcoming the students was Norbe Risco, director of the Kentucky Ballet. Mr. Risco spoke to students about the art of ballet and, since the sets for the Nutcracker were too large to transport to Morehead, he encouraged the students to use their imagination as he described the setting for the dances.
For the vast majority of the students watching the performances, this was their first time seeing ballet dancers on stage. The children found themselves amazed as they watched the dancers leap across the stage or dance on their toes, or, in ballet speak, “en pointe.”  Upon the conclusion of the performance, some students could be seen, as they waited for their buses, taking some of the dance positions that they had just seen on stage.
“Having the Kentucky Ballet come to Morehead has been such a treat for our students,” said Genny Jenkins, coordinator for Rowan County Schools’ gifted and talented program. “This has been a wonderful opportunity to broaden horizons for our students and help them understand another facet of the arts.”
The Kentucky Ballet will be returning to Morehead in the spring of 2013 to once again share their talents with the students of Rowan County Schools. Performances of “The Nutcracker” by the Kentucky Ballet Theatre will be presented on KET-KY on the following dates:
