Rowan County Senior High School News

Rowan County Schools will be closed Thursday January 31, 2019 due to icy road conditions and bitterly cold temperatures.  Please stay safe and stay warm.

The Rowan County Board of Education has 18.242 acres of surplus property for sale. The property is located at 2230 Flemingsburg Road, State Route 32, Morehead, Kentucky 40351. Anyone interested may contact Superintendent John Maxey for additional details at 606-784-8928

In response to a report of a potential threat at St. Claire Regional Medical Center this morning (11-1-18), the Rowan County School System went into a heightened state of alert, asking its staff to be vigilant until law enforcement officials were able to quickly determine that there was no threat to the hospital.  This heightened state of alert at the school facilities did not interrupt or impact any activities at the schools.

THIS IS ONLY A DRILL

On Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at approximately 9:15 a.m. St. Claire HealthCare, Rowan County EMS, local fire and law enforcement officials, and Rowan County Schools Transportation Department will be conducting a mock emergency drill.  This is only a drill. 

The drill will be a MOCK bus accident that will take place off Stadium Drive behind Rowan County Schools Transportation Department’s Bus Garage.  Staff from St. Claire HealthCare will be role-playing as students and staff on the bus and will be transported to St. Claire’s emergency facilities. 

This mock emergency drill is allowing medical staff, emergency staff and staff from Rowan County Schools Transportation Department to practice and perfect skills that would be needed in the event of an actual emergency. 

We urge everyone to remember that this is a drill and not an actual emergency.

Due to flooding and poor road conditions, schools will be closed on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018.  We urge all people to stay safe.

DUE TO THE CONTINUED EXTREME TEMPERATURES, ALL ROWAN COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT ACTIVITIES – BOTH HOME AND AWAY, HAVE BEEN CANCELLED FOR FRIDAY AND SATURDAY EVENTS.

The 16^th Region Cheerleading Champions of McBrayer clinched the 3^rd Runner up Title at the State KAPOS Cheerleading Championship on Saturday December 16^th at All Tech Arena.

On Saturday, December 16, the Rowan County Middle School cheerleaders traveled to the Alltech Arena in Lexington, KY to compete in the KAPOS Elementary and Middle School State cheerleading championship.

On Saturday, December 16, the Clearfield Elementary Cougar cheerleaders traveled to the Alltech Arena in Lexington, KY to compete in the KAPOS Elementary and Middle School State cheerleading championship.

Even though it was a cold and snowy day in Lexington, KY the Viking varsity cheerleaders were on FIRE Saturday in Alltech Arena as they WOW’d the crowd and captured an amazing FIFTH place finish at the 2017 KHSAA State Competitive cheer competition!

It is with heavy hearts that we remember Coach Keith Prater, who lost a courageous battle against leukemia.  It can truly be said that he waged this battle the way he lived his life -- with dignity, with strength and with an unwavering faith.  He will be missed and fondly remembered by so many people in this community and beyond.

Kindergarten Academy:  A summer program for incoming Kindergarten students to learn routines/procedures and practice readiness skills.  

Nineteen members of the Rowan County Senior High School Class of 2017 will be graduating Summa Cum Laude, meaning they have maintained a GPA of 4.0 or greater during their four years at the high school.

The Rowan County Senior High School Drama Department will be presenting "The Sound of Music" beginning April 27 and running through April 30.

The Rowan County School District, whose schools are also fully accredited, is one of only thirty-nine (39) public school districts in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to successfully complete the process to receive and maintain accreditation from AdvancED. 

RCSHS Prom will be held at the Morehead Conference Center on Saturday, May 6th from 8:00-11:00pm. Walk-In will begin at 6:45pm.  Read more about eligibility.

RCSHS Project Prom will begin on Saturday, May 6th at 11:45pm and end on Sunday, May 7th at Rowan County Senior High School. Project Prom provides a fun, safe place for students to eat, play games and win prizes after prom. Students will receive a t-shirt upon entering Project Prom. Students will not be permitted to leave project prom before 5:00am without parent permission.

Kentucky Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt will be hosting a series of regional Town Hall Meetings across the Commonwealth to gather feedback from Kentuckians on a new accountability that has been under development for the past year.  The Town Hall Meeting scheduled for the Rowan County area will be on April 17, 2017 from 6:30-8:00 PM at Rowan County Senior High School’s Performing Arts Center (499 Viking Drive.)

The late SSgt. Daniel Fannin (Class of 2001) and former RCSHS teacher and assistant principal Nadine Griffith are the newest members inducted into the RCSHS Hall of Fame on February 2, 2017.

Kelly Ford, who has served as an assistant coach under five head coaches at Rowan County Senior High School, was named to take over the helm of the high school’s football program.

Genny Jenkins named to Kentucky Advisory Council for Gifted and Talented Education.

Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) will underwrite the cost of the 2016-17 AP tests for students who qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.

Congratulations to the Rowan County Middle School Cheerleaders, for placing 4th at the KAPOS Cheerleading Competition, Saturday, December 17.  The competition was held at the Kentucky Horse Park; Alltech Arena with over 80 elementary and middle school teams in attendance.

The Kentucky Educational Development Corporation recently named Rowan County Schools’ Marvin Moore as the KEDC 2016 Superintendent of the Year. 

Join us at 7 PM on Thursday, November 13, 2015 or Friday, November 14, 2015 for "A Night of One-Acts"  at the Rowan County Senior High School Performing Arts Center. 

What a great season the Rowan County Senior High School Boys and Girls Soccer Teams have had this year.  Each team won the 61st District Championship, the 16th Regional Championship, and qualified for the State Playoffs.  With a win for each team in the first round of KHSAA Soccer's Sweet Sixteen (hosted on home turf), the teams then moved to the Elite Eight.  While neither team moved beyond the Elite Eight, the team members and their coaches should be proud of their accomplishments in the 2015 season of high school soccer.  CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations go to Carley Anderson, daughter of Heather Anderson and Dwayne Anderson, who was named the 2015 Rowan County Senior High School Homecoming Queen.  Carley's escort was Blake Carver, son of Serena Egbert and Billy Carver.

On Friday, January 9, 2015, between the RCSHS Boys JV and Varsity Vikings basketball game, the late Collin T. Thomas and Kelly Wells will become the newest members of the RCSHS Alumni Hall of Fame. Prior to the induction ceremony, a reception beginning at 5:30 PM will be held in the Viking Café to honor the inductees, their families and their friends.

In order to help the education process run more smoothly, we have implemented a red card/green card system for our students having electronic devices.   We are asking for your support and help to implement this new procedure.  If you have any questions, please call the high school at 784-8956.

6-1 win over Perry County Central sends RCSHS Boys Viking Soccer to Elite Eight of the State Tournament.

Twenty teachers receive Wal-Mart Teacher Rewards Cards.

On the morning of Friday, September 19, 2014, administrators at Rowan County Senior High School were informed of unsubstantiated rumors being spread by students through various social media sites.  Once news of the rumor was reported to authorities at the high school, immediate action was taken to track down the source of the rumor at the high school. 

At least four schools in eastern Kentucky today have been dealing with the similar rumors.    At no time was Rowan County Senior High School ever placed on lockdown. 

While the faculty and staff at the high school understand parents’ concern for their children’s safety, it must be noted that the rumors have been proven to be unsubstantiated and that the safety of the students is of primary concern by the staff of Rowan County Schools.

Due to widespread power outages across the county, Rowan County Middle School and Rowan County Senior High School will be open from 1 PM to 4 PM today (Friday, February 7, 2014) for Rowan County students and parents to take a shower.  Parents are asked to stay with their child and bring their own toiletry items.  The Youth Service Center staff will be on hand.  If families need water, please bring a container with you to get water.
