5th grade Physical Properties
|
|
I can define the different types of physical properties. (e.g. texture, color, odor, melting point, boiling point, density, and solubility). Physical properties are properties (characteristics) that we can easily observe with our senses--by seeing, hearing, touching, or smelling.
I can identify various ways objects can be identified by its physical properties (e.g. texture, color, odor, melting point, boiling point, density, and solubility). Color, hardness, texture, size, shape, and smell are physical properties.
I can explain how certain substances has its own properties that make it different. Physical properties are helpful when we need to identify substances. Sometimes two different substances can appear the same until we observe them more closely. For example, both salt and sugar are white, are made up of small crystals, and look powdery. You might not be able to tell them apart by just looking though.
I can use appropriate tools (e.g. balance, thermometer, graduated cylinder) to classify different materials. I use a thermometer to measure the temperature of matter (physical property). I use a scale to measure how much mass an object has. (weight) I use a graduated cylinder to measure (the volume), or how much space matter takes up.
I can compare different densities of different substances (e.g. metal, wood, oil, water, karo syrup, and plastic) (sink/float activity in water with diet pepsi/coke and and regular pepsi/coke. (diet soda(less dense) floats above regular soda (more dense) in a tank of water). Page E10-13 Density is the amount of matter in a given space. Density describes how tightly matter is packed together. The density affects how bouyant an object is. Bouyancy is about how well an object floats.
I can explain melting point (e.g. melting point is when a substance melts from a solid to a liquid, i.e. ice cube melts, butter melting, etc....) E36-39
I can explain boiling point (e.g. when enough heat is applied to a liquid turning to a gas/vapor i.e. boiling water etc...)E 36-39
