RCMS students come in first, second in spelling bee

Shane Kilgore, sixth grade student at Rowan County Middle School and son of son of Sherry Kilgore and Aaron Kilgore, earned the title of Rowan County School District Spelling Bee Champion on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 when he correctly spelled the word “spherical.”  As the winner of the county spelling bee, Shane has qualified to represent Rowan County in the state Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee on March 9, 2013.

The runner-up for this year’s spelling bee was another Rowan County Middle School student.  Donovan Sheets, 8th grader and son of Daryl and Toni Sheets, held his own through eight rounds before being named the runner-up of the Rowan County Spelling Bee.  This year’s spelling event was held at Coffee Tree Books in Morehead.

The district’s four elementary schools and Rowan County Middle School held classroom and school spelling bees to determine a winner and runner-up for each school.  The contestants for this year’s spelling bee were: Rayven Jones and Romeo Perez from Clearfield Elementary; Maggie Qin and Madison Ortega from McBrayer Elementary; Holly Nance and Nick Bowman from Rodburn Elementary; Abram Riley and Brooke Howard from Tilden Hogge Elementary; and Shane Kilgore and Donovan Sheets from Rowan County Middle School.  Due to illness, Holly Nance from Rodburn Elementary School was unable to compete.

“I really have to congratulate all the students who took part in this year’s spelling bee.  Having to spell words in front of a crowd can be very challenging; believe me, I know.  These kids did a great job and I am so very proud of them,” said Genny Jenkins, the organizer of the Rowan County School District Spelling Bee.  “I also need to thank Coffee Tree Books.  It was wonderful having them as hosts once again for the spelling bee.”
