More Information

In preparation for the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse on August 21, Morehead State University's Star Theater will host special presentations of the program "Totality," August 14 through 18.

Totality is a fascinating look at all the wonders of eclipses, especially total solar eclipses.

The 25-minute program, produced by Bays Mountain Planetarium, examines what eclipses are, how and when they occur, and what wonderful sights they create.  It also looks back to a fascinating period in scientific discovery when general relativity was proven with the photographic  recording of a total solar eclipse.

This production includes a variety of wonderful styles - from spectacular space environments to humorous pop-up books.  A very special part of the show relates, in a very human way, what happens when you are caught in the shadow of the moon and the sun is plunged into a total solar eclipse.

Programs will be held at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. each night Monday through Friday.  Monday through Thursday the 6 p.m. program will be followed by a 15 minute talk/question and answer session presented by Dr. Thomas Pannuti, professor of astrophysics and space science.

The 7 p.m. program will be followed by a 15 minute talk/question and answer session presented by Dr. Dirk Grupe, assistant professor of astrophysics and space science.  There will be no talks after the Friday programs.

Admission for these programs is $2 per person (4 years old and under admitted free).

For information, call the Space Science Center's Star Theater at 783-9593 or visit its website at www.moreheadstate.edu/startheater.

More Information

Rides, pageants, Extreme Hillbilly Motorsports, and some of the most popular musicians in the region will all be on hand this week as the annual Rowan County Fair is set to kick off this Wednesday.

The fair will run until Saturday at the Morehead-Rowan County Jaycee Farm at 60 Jaycee Farm Road off US 60 east just about one-half mile past Christy Creek Road.

Wednesday through Friday the fair will be open from 5:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Saturday the fair will open at 4 p.m. and will end after all the scheduled events have been completed.

Entry fee for the fair is $10 per person and includes an armband for all of the event’s rides operated by “Casey’s Rides.”

Face painting will be available during all open hours, along with various food and beverage vendors.

The affordable face-paintings will be done by Elijah Hartgrove, a Morehead State University graduate. Prices will be listed outside the booth, with requests available along with a variety of pre-selected designs.

Wednesday will start the event’s pageants and includes:

• Baby Miss Rowan County Fair (0-11 months)

• Toddler Miss Rowan County Fair (1-2 years old)

• Baby Mister Rowan County Fair (0-2 years)

• Tiny Miss Rowan County Fair (3-4 years)

• Little Miss and Mister Rowan County Fair (5-7 years, who will compete as a couple)

Thursday’s pageants include:

• Miss Pre-Teen Rowan County Fair (8-12 years)

• Miss Teen Rowan County Fair (13-15 years)

• Miss Rowan County Fair (16-21 years)

An open mic session will be held after the pageants on Thursday.

Registration for the pageants are from 5 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. with the events beginning at 6 p.m.

Along with the multitude of games and rides being hosted over the weekend, Extreme Hillbilly Motorsports will also take place on Friday and Saturday.

Also on Friday, Branden Martin and SourMash will take the stage to play music at 7:30 p.m.

Martin, an Owingsville native and Nashville recording singer and songwriter, was the 2014 winner of Flemingsburg’s “Hoedown in the Holler” and was a contest on NBC’s “The Voice” in 2017.

On Saturday, “FOCUS” will take the stage at 5 p.m. with “Seven Turn” playing at 8 p.m.

FOCUS is a Christian contemporary band from Morehead that delivers “raw and thought provoking lyrics with a musical style that is electric and fresh; running from the gamut from heartfelt worship.”

Seven Turn is another popular local band that plays both old and new country and rock music.

This year’s fair is presented in cooperation with various sponsors and the Morehead-Rowan County Jaycees Inc.
