‘Quarters for Kids’: Concert to benefit kids locally and abroad

  • By BRAD STACY The Morehead News

Next week a few minutes of your time and a quarter out of your pocket will help benefit children who have lost their parents both locally and across the world.

“Quarters for Kids” is scheduled for Monday, April 23, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., at Button Auditorium on the campus of Morehead State University.

The concert will feature a variety of local music talents that will perform in an effort to raise money for local youth through the Sunrise Children’s Services’ local foster care program and the Craig Children and Family Foundation of Uganda.

Michael Harford, MSU professor of management, said he was inspired to put on the benefit concert after seeing Ssentongo David, president and founder of the Ugandan group, build and manage an orphanage for children.

“For the most of us, a quarter is small change, something that can be found nearly anywhere,” Harford said. “A quarter here to us doesn’t mean much, but in Uganda, it’s a lot.”

Musical talents will include those with the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music, the Black Gospel Ensemble, and volunteers from the community campus.

Proceeds will be split evenly between the two groups that provide aid, shelter, and education for underprivileged children who have lost their families.

“Both groups work diligently to provide youth in crisis with the tools they need to lead today and tomorrow,” the professor said. “These agencies give their all to promote integrity, self-discipline, love and selflessness for the benefit of today’s future . . . the children.”

Admission to the concert is just a quarter, but Harford said “with faith and trust in our community we know that each quarter will multiply in ways we can only imagine.”

For more information visit the Facebook page, “Quarters for Kids.”

“An individual reaches into their pocket, grabs a quarter, and flips it out and they’ll never miss it,” Harford said. “But put them all together and whole lot of love comes out. That’s what this is all about.”

There is also a GoFundMe set up with the goal to raise $500. More than $100 have been raised on the page that can be viewed at https://www.gofundme.com/quarter-for-the-kids.
