New Superintendent John Maxey & Rowan County School Board members

By a unanimous vote of members of the Rowan County School Board at a special-called Board meeting on April 25, 2018, John D. Maxey was appointed the new Superintendent of the Rowan County School System.  Prior to his appointment as the new Superintendent, Mr. Maxey served as Assistant Superintendent of Rowan County Schools for the past nine years where he assisted the Superintendent Marvin Moore in daily operations and management of the Rowan County School System, consisting of four elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and a centralized preschool, with a total enrollment of 3,300 students and 493 staff members.  Mr. Maxey will begin his role as the new Superintendent on July 1, 2018.

His duties also included District Technology Director, Maintenance/Facilities Director and Transportation Director.  He has acquired over 25 years of experience in education, with the last 18 years serving in central office administrative positions.  Mr. Maxey has vast experience in integrating technology into both instruction and assessment to improve student achievement.

Mr. Maxey is a career educator with experience in a variety of environments including middle school teacher and high school teacher in the Floyd and Bath County School Systems, Director of Purchasing and Transportation for Bath County Schools, and District Technology Director and Vocational Coordinator for Morgan County Schools. He is committed to the success of every child and has built an extensive legacy of successful school and administrative leadership. Mr. Maxey is a leader in initiatives to target instruction and intervention to ensure that our students are college and career ready and help them reach their full potential.

A three-time graduate of Morehead State University, Mr. Maxey holds certification in Industrial Education, Vocational Supervision and Coordination, Vocational School Principal, K-12 Principal, and Superintendent. He and his wife, Susan, have two children.

“Speaking for my fellow Board members, John Maxey was definitely the best qualified candidate that we interviewed,” said Rowan County School Board Chairman Rick Whelan.  “We were impressed with his knowledge of this district and we know that, considering all the uncertainty that this and other districts have had to face with what has been happening in Frankfort, John will be able to ‘hit the ground running’ when he takes the helm.”

“I appreciate the confidence that the Board members have in me,” said John Maxey.  “This is a great school district and I look forward to working together with the faculty, staff, students, parents, and the community to continue this district’s proud tradition of excellence.”
