Max Elam, Starla Wilson named Mr. and Miss RCSHS 2018

Each year the faculty and staff of Rowan County Senior High School select a group of seniors who have been exemplary in leadership, character, service and academics throughout their high school academic and extracurricular/co-curricular careers.  These students must have outstanding GPAs, be a visible leader in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, and consistently demonstrate good behavior.  This year ten students were presented on the court of the RCSHS gymnasium on February 8, 2018 between the boys’ Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball games.  Of those ten students, Max Elam and Starla Wilson were awarded the prestigious honor of being named Mr. and Miss RCSHS 2018.

 

The following ten candidates who were nominated for the title of Mr. and Miss RCSHS were, in alphabetical order:

 

Conner Barker, son of Steve and Amber Barker and Darrell and Kim Crawford, is captain and four-year member of the boys’ varsity soccer team, vice president of the National Honor Society and four-year member of the archery team.  Conner’s favorite class taken at RCSHS was AP US History with Mrs. Peyton because it was very interesting and taught him the importance of reading a textbook and study skills that he will take to college.  He plans to attend Morehead State University and obtain a bachelor of science in nursing with hopes of becoming a nurse practitioner or certified registered nurse anesthetist.

 

Kelsey Cyrus, daughter of Vivian and Steve Cyrus, is the captain and seven-year member of the RCSHS cross-country and track teams, a 2017 Governor’s Scholar and a student representative on the Title IX committee.  Her favorite class at the high school was AP History because she like history and the class was fun.  After graduation, Kelsey plans to attend the United States Naval Academy to study electrical engineering.

 

Maxwell Elam is the son of James and Kimberly Elam.  Max is a member of the archery team, National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and Future Farmers of America.   His favorite class at RCSHS was AP European History because he learned a lot about medieval times and how it is applicable to modern times. After graduation, Max plans to attend Maysville Community and Technical College to obtain an Associate’s degree in applied science and Morehead State to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in industrial management. Max hopes to one day own his own HVAC and refrigeration business.

 

Sarah Hallock is the daughter of Ben and Shellie Hallock.  She is a member of the varsity softball team, National Honors Society, SGA and Y-Club. Her favorite class taken at RCSHS was Anatomy and Physiology because it taught her how to become a better student.  After graduation, Sarah plans to attend Kentucky Christian University to play softball and major in Biology with plans of becoming a pediatric physical therapist.     

 

Benjamin Hutchinson is the son of Elizabeth and Brian Hutchinson.  He is a member of the baseball team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and MSU Dual Credit program.  His favorite class taken at RCSHS was Art because Mr. Ratcliff taught him so much, not only about art but about life as well. After graduation, Benjamin plans to pursue a degree in Nursing at Morehead State University. 

 

Holly Lamb is the daughter of Don and Louise Lamb.  She is president of the National Honor Society, member of the Future Business Leaders of America and Sadie Hawkins Show emcee.  Her favorite class taken at RCSHS was AP Biology because, as Holly asks, “Doesn’t everyone want to learn about biology all day?”  Holly plans to become an Eagle and major in Business at Morehead State.     

 

Macee Pennington, the daughter of Lee and Jenny Pennington, is member of the Y-Club, Student Government Association and Science Club.  Her favorite class taken at RCSHS was sophomore Honors English with Lowell Adkins because of the in depth class discussions in which she was able to participate. Macee plans to attend Morehead State University to major in Business Administration.     

 

Noah Tansil is the son of Monica Lee and Alonzo Tansil and is being raised by April Ward and Sara Adkins. Noah is a member of the basketball, football, soccer and track teams.  Noah’s favorite class at RCSHS was peer tutoring because working with the children is a great experience and always brightens his day.   After graduation, Noah plans to attend an undecided college and major in biomedical sciences, pursuing a career in dentistry.

 

Zack Watkins is the son of Greg and Laura Watkins. Noah is a member of the football team, band and National Honor Society.  Zack’s favorite class at RCSHS was band class because he could always end his day on a good “note.”   After graduation, Zack plans to attend college and major in Music Education.

 

Starla Wilson, the daughter of Junior and Kristi Wilson, is a member of the volleyball and swimming teams as well as the National Honor Society.  Her favorite class taken at RCSHS was Spanish 101 because Señora O’Brien is a great teacher and the classmates felt like family.  After graduation, Starla plans to attend the University of Kentucky to major in Chemical Engineering with an emphasis in Environmental Engineering.
