At the regular meeting of the Rowan County School Board on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, Kevin Moore, risk control consultant for Liberty Mutual/Roeding Insurance Agency, and David Livingston, representing Liberty Mutual, were on hand to present the Gold Safety Award to the Rowan County Schools Transportation Department. The Gold Safety Award is highest achievable fleet award offered by Liberty Mutual. The award honored the safety record for the district’s Transportation Department for the 2016-2017 school year.
“This is a prestigious award, one that an organization must be nominated for to win,” said Kevin Moore. “Just to be nominated, you have to be able to show excellence as well as measured improvement. When Mike Peak, our Liberty Mutual representative saw just how much this transportation had improved from the 2015-2016 to the 2016-2017 school year, going from a 76% loss ratio to a 1% loss ratio, he knew that they needed to be honored.”
Kevin Moore informed those in attendance that to earn the award, the organization must first be nominated and move up through the nomination process nationally. “Your transportation department was not just being compared to other school district transportation departments; they were going up against other areas of industry across the nation and came out on top with the Gold Safety Award.”
The Rowan County Schools Transportation Department has approximately fifty buses on the road traveling over 3,000 miles to and from schools each school day – 533, 888 miles each year. Guy Griffin, compliance coordinator for the Transportation Department, was on hand to accept the award and offered the following words on behalf of Transportation Director Jane Davenport and the staff of the Rowan County Schools Transportation Department.
“This award was earned by our drivers, our monitors and our mechanics for putting forth the efforts to make improvements that were suggested by Mike Peak, our Liberty Mutual representative. He presented ideas to improve the transportation and safety of our students. Following his recommendations, we have implemented safety meetings, driver updates, one-on-one training methods, and have set up and are using a mirror grid system. The teamwork between Liberty Mutual and the Rowan County Schools Transportation Department is ensuring the safer transportation of our students to and from school.”
John Maxey, assistant superintendent for Rowan County Schools, congratulated the staff of the Rowan County Schools Transportation Department and added, “I think we can all be proud to see how having Liberty Mutual working in partnership with the transportation staff is improving the safety of the transportation department.”
“I want to congratulate Janie Davenport, Guy Griffin and the entire staff of the Rowan County Schools Transportation Department,” said Supt. Marvin Moore. “I know that the drivers, the monitors, the mechanics, all the staff at the Bus Garage take very seriously the job of transporting our students. This Gold Safety Award exemplifies the teamwork and dedication displayed by our transportation staff.”
