Each year the faculty and staff of Rowan County Senior High School select a group of seniors who have been exemplary in leadership, character, service and academics. These students must have outstanding GPAs, be a visible leader in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, and consistently demonstrate good behavior. This year ten students were presented on the court of the RCSHS gymnasium on January 31, 2017 between the boys’ Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball games. Of those ten students, Nick Anderson and Emma Li Mathews were awarded the prestigious honor of being named Mr. and Miss RCSHS 2017.
These ten candidates for the title of Mr. and Miss RCSHS were:
Harper Anderson & Nick Anderson
Harper Anderson, daughter of Joe and Jennifer Anderson, is president of the National Honor Society, a four-year member of the varsity soccer team, and a four-year member of the Co-Ed-Y Club. Her favorite class at the high school has been AP English Language because of her teacher, Mrs. Johnson. After graduation, Harper plans to attend college and major in political science.
Nick Anderson, son of Kevin and Julie Anderson, is a member of the RCSHS cross-country team, National Honor Society, and the Student Government Association. He plans to attend Morehead State University with an undecided major and hopes one day to end global poverty. Nick’s favorite class has been studio art because his teacher, Mr. Ratcliff, has allowed him to express his creativity.
Allyson Callahan & James Moore
Allyson Callahan is the daughter of Thad and Jessica Callahan. She is a member of the varsity basketball team, national Honor Society and participates in the Early Childcare Education pathway. Mrs. Johnson’s AP English Language class has been Allyson’s favorite class because of the fun and creative learning environment. After graduation, Allyson plans to major in primary education at a college that gives her an opportunity to continue her basketball career.
James Moore is the son of Jimbo Moore and Teresa Moore. He is a member of the football and basketball teams at RCSHS. The high school Robotics class has been James’ favorite class while at RCSHS.
Amelia Carlisle & Jacob Sergent
Amelia Carlisle, the daughter of Brian and Anissa Carlisle, is president the RCSHS Student Y Club, a member of the varsity volleyball team and a member of the National Honor Society. Her favorite class while at the high school has been Mr. Hart’s 2nd period U.S. History class during her junior year because he provided an environment in which comradery flourished and learning was fun. After graduation, Amelia plans to attend Morehead State University.
Jacob Sergent is the son of Denine and James Sergent. He is vice-president of the Technology Student Association and a member of both the tennis and bowling teams. His favorite class has been AP Art because it allowed him to do something he was passionate about. Jacob plans to attend Morehead State University to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in the fine arts or attend the Kentucky Fame Program for a manufacturing technician degree.
Emma Li Mathews & Braiden Thacker
Emma Li Mathews, the daughter of Mike and Allison Mathews, is a member of the Student Government Association, the Speech and Debate Team, and the varsity volleyball team. Emma Li’s favorite class has been Mrs. Johnson’s AP English Language class because her teacher helped her become a better writer and a better person. After graduation, Emma Li plans to attend college and pursue a career.
Braiden Thacker, the son of Kate and Shawn Thacker, is a member of the tennis, basketball and cross-country teams at the high school. Braiden has enjoyed all his classes at the high school because the RCSHS faculty has become his second family and helped him become college and career ready. After graduation, he plans to attend an decided college or university and major in manufacturing engineering.
Grace Rogers & Conner Thomas
Grace Rogers is the daughter of Carmen Rogers and Don Rogers. She is a member of the Student Y Club, the Student Government Association, and the Science Club. Her favorite class was AP U.S. History because it challenged her academically as well as intellectually and pushed her to inquire further about the reasons behind current events. After graduation, Grace plans to attend a four-year university to pursue a career that allows her to continue fighting for social justice and think creatively.
Conner Thomas, the son of Jill Thomas and Mark Thomas, is the captain of the basketball team and a member of the Student Y Club and Student Government Association. His favorite class has been Mr. Walters’ Psychology class because it was intellectually stimulating while also being laid back and fun. Conner plans to attend the University of Kentucky to major in business and economics.
