Rowan County Schools honors its School Board members

School Board Recognition Month

January has been designated as School Board Recognition Month in Kentucky and the Rowan County School District is joining in the celebration.

Board Chairman Rick Whelan, Board Vice-Chairman Danny Mabry, and Board Members Jennifer Anderson, Scott Davison and Brenda Stamm are among the more than 850 school board members in the state’s 173 local school districts being recognized this month for their service.  Together Rowan County’s five School Board members have amassed over 37 years in service to the students, faculty and staff of the Rowan County School District.

Being a member of a School Board is not a position to be taken lightly.  Board members are required to complete a minimum number of training hours each year in areas such as school finance, ethics, and superintendent evaluation.  New Board members must also receive training in areas that include school law, community relations, policy development, and goal setting.

“This is the perfect time to thank school board members for serving in a role that has become increasingly complex,” said David Webster, president of the Kentucky School Boards Association and chairman of the Simpson County School Board.

“Members of the Rowan County Board of Education are responsible for making decisions aimed at ensuring that every child in their district has a chance to be successful both in school and in life,” Webster said. “To do that, members oversee the district’s budget, keep up with changing education laws and policies and spend hours on professional learning and state-mandated training.”

“The voters in the Rowan County community have elected our board members, with the understanding that these five individuals have and will continue to dedicate themselves to work to give every child in every classroom access to high quality teaching and learning,” said Supt. John Maxey.

“At a time when funding from the state and federal levels continues to shrink, our School Board members have not flinched in the face of the challenges or shied away from their responsibilities,” Maxey said. “Our community can be very proud of this team of Board members, and I’m proud to be their partner in striving for education excellence for our children.”

The Rowan County School Board meets regularly at 6 PM on the 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Board room of Rowan County Schools Central Office, 415 W. Sun Street in Morehead, KY.  The meetings are open to the public.
